In fact, it was her skating career that inspired her to learn Turkish ā€“ after encountering the Turkish national team, and their language, at a training camp in Switzerland.</p> <p>Lim didnā€™t intend to focus on languages and linguistics when she arrived at Ā鶹ֱ²„app. She initially enrolled in life sciences with the intention of becoming a cardiac surgeon. But it wasn't long before she switched to a specialist program in Spanish.</p> <p>A key turning point came when she took a course on linguistic varieties of Spanish taught by Professor <strong>Laura Colantoni</strong>. ā€œSheā€™s an amazing professor and her course was so intriguing, so I decided to pursue linguistics and took more courses with her,ā€ says Lim, who earned&nbsp;an honours bachelor of arts in Spanish with a specialist in Hispanic linguistics and a minor in Latin American studies in 2023.</p> <p>Along the way, she&nbsp;challenged herself by taking a new language course every year: French, Turkish, Portuguese, Italian and Swahili.</p> <p>She didnā€™t need to take a course for Indonesian, though. ā€œBecause my dad worked in Indonesia for about 15 years, we picked that up too,ā€ she says.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media align-left"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2024-07/Rebel-7-%281%29-crop.jpg" width="300" height="450" alt="Xin Yi Lim poses in a figure skating costume while doing a leg lift"> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Lim has competed in and taught figure skating in both Malaysia and Canada</em></figcaption> </figure> <p>While she added to her list of languages, Lim also advanced her prowess in skating as a member of the Varsity Blues figure skating team in 2020 and 2021. She also holds a 1st Kyu in Kyokushin karate and is a bartender, mixologist and graphic designer.</p> <p>Going forward, Lim hopes to continue skating professionally, including by performing internationally as a skater with Disney on Ice.</p> <p>And, no surprise, she also plans to continue expanding her range of languages.</p> <p>ā€œWhen you learn another language, youā€™re really expanding your cognitive load ā€” and that in turn helps you learn your next language,ā€ says Lim, who describes being able to converse in 11 languages as feeling ā€œlike I have 11 channels in my brain.ā€</p> <p>She adds that the biggest benefit has been her ability to connect with more people and cultures. ā€œNelson Mandela said, ā€˜If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart,ā€™ā€ she says.</p> <p>ā€œAfter I learned that saying, I never saw languages in the same light. I realized that even if I could only say a couple of words in somebody elseā€™s language, it would let them know how much time, compassion and effort I have for understanding other cultures.ā€</p> <p>Next on her list? Arabic. ā€œIā€™m so interested to learn it. Itā€™s one of the most diverse and popular languages in Toronto, but the script is really challenging,ā€ Lim says.</p> <p>ā€œThat one requires time.ā€</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Tue, 30 Jul 2024 13:26:26 +0000 rahul.kalvapalle 308535 at Ā鶹ֱ²„app community members head to Paris Olympics as members of Team Canada /news/u-t-community-members-head-paris-olympics-members-team-canada <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Ā鶹ֱ²„app community members head to Paris Olympics as members of Team Canada</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-07/olympians-2024-v2.jpg?h=d7fb837f&amp;itok=hq1BQM8M 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2024-07/olympians-2024-v2.jpg?h=d7fb837f&amp;itok=dgS2Fa66 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2024-07/olympians-2024-v2.jpg?h=d7fb837f&amp;itok=zPHNR4Ea 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2024-07/olympians-2024-v2.jpg?h=d7fb837f&amp;itok=hq1BQM8M" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-07-23T09:18:06-04:00" title="Tuesday, July 23, 2024 - 09:18" class="datetime">Tue, 07/23/2024 - 09:18</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>(L-R) Former Ā鶹ֱ²„app Varsity Blues athletes Heather Bansley, Michelle Li, Kylie Masse, Lucia Stafford and Jazz Shukla will be competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games (photos by Essene Hernandez/Eyepix Group/LightRocket/Getty Images, Shi Tang/Getty Images, Al Bello/Getty Images, Andy Astfalck/BSR Agency/Getty Images, MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/jill-clark" hreflang="en">Jill Clark</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/global-lens" hreflang="en">Global Lens</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/athletes" hreflang="en">Athletes</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-kinesiology-physical-education" hreflang="en">Faculty of Kinesiology &amp; In addition, the MLSE Foundation, NBA Canada, Sinai Health Foundation, Raptors for Research, and Canada Basketball have all shared interests in connecting with Ā鶹ֱ²„app and potentially engaging in future partnerships, Wong says.</p> <p>He adds that heā€™s confident viewers will find the second season of <em>Joeā€™s Basketball Diaries</em> as compelling as the first ā€“ and encourages new viewers to explore older episodes.</p> <p>ā€œTheyā€™re timely, but theyā€™re also timeless.ā€</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Wed, 29 Nov 2023 16:04:13 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 304729 at Prehistoric: Ā鶹ֱ²„app alum Alex Wong explores the Toronto Raptors' origin story /news/prehistoric-u-t-alum-alex-wong-explores-toronto-raptors-origin-story <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Prehistoric: Ā鶹ֱ²„app alum Alex Wong explores the Toronto Raptors' origin story</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-10/10-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=H1DbzWQW 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2023-10/10-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=Pg1k2WNl 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2023-10/10-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=u3yyRB8A 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-10/10-crop.jpg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=H1DbzWQW" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>rahul.kalvapalle</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2023-11-01T10:41:30-04:00" title="Wednesday, November 1, 2023 - 10:41" class="datetime">Wed, 11/01/2023 - 10:41</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>Ā鶹ֱ²„app alumnus Alex Wong signed copies of his book Prehistoric: the Improbable and Audacious Origin Story of the Toronto Raptors at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport (all photos by Dewey Chang)</em></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/jelena-damjanovic" hreflang="en">Jelena Damjanovic</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/city-culture" hreflang="en">City &amp; How did that moment on the ice feel?</b></p> <p>It was a normal Saturday when I woke up. I was going to study, run some errands&nbsp;and watch the game at home or with my buddies. Suddenly, I got a phone call from [Maple Leafs] management and they told me to grab my equipment and head to the rink. It all happened really quickly. Luckily, there was just enough time to get my parents and girlfriend there. &nbsp;</p> <p>I was getting ready in the same locker room as the rest of the team. Itā€™s pretty crazy ā€“ you watch these guys on television and then youā€™re sitting next to them in the change room.</p> <p>Being in a locker room around teammates and friends my entire life, you get comfortable with that camaraderie, the jokes and the goofiness. Then you see it at an NHL level and realize itā€™s the same. They like to have fun, but they also take it very seriously and theyā€™re very professional.</p> <p>Sitting on the bench was so special. The players use iPads on the bench to watch their shift so they can make quick adjustments to their play. At the Varsity games, our coaching staff usually watch video in between periods or after the game. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>[Maple Leafs Head Coach] Sheldon Keefe comes down the bench and heā€™s like, ā€œGet in there, Jett.ā€ I hop over the boards, get my helmet on and get in the net. I didnā€™t really have too much time to be anxious because it all happened so quickly. I tried to soak it all in after the game.</p> <p><b>What is your pre-game ritual?</b></p> <p>I wasnā€™t starting, so when Iā€™m starting itā€™s a bit different and more detailed. I get to the rink early, get a good amount of stretching in, listen to music and get ready for about 20 minutes before I go on the ice for warmup.</p> <p>I didnā€™t want to get in anyoneā€™s way or mess up their pre-game routine, so I was trying to find that balance on Saturday.</p> <p><b>How did your family react to the news?</b></p> <p>They were just like, ā€œNo way ā€“ you're kidding, right?ā€</p> <p>Since I was able to get out there for the last minute, I just feel really lucky and grateful that I got to enjoy that with them there. It means way more that I had my family there.</p> <p>My dad is a Habs fan, but Iā€™m sure he was a Leafs fan for the night. A Montreal versus Toronto&nbsp;game on a Saturday ā€“ it doesnā€™t get any bigger than that. That rivalry has been around for decades and itā€™s pretty cool thatā€™s the game I got to be a part of.</p> <figure role="group" class="caption caption-drupal-media"> <div> <div class="field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/2023-04/GettyImages-1251038218-crop.jpeg" width="1140" height="760" alt="Auston Matthews, Ilya Samsonov and Jett Alexander."> </div> </div> <figcaption><em>Auston Matthews, left, and goalie Ilya Samsonov, middle,&nbsp;congratulate&nbsp;Jett Alexander, right, on his first NHL game (Richard Lautens/Toronto Star via Getty Images)</em></figcaption> </figure> <p><b>How did being on the Varsity Blues team prepare you for this opportunity? What has sports taught you?</b></p> <p>At this point, I canā€™t imagine my life without sports. Being on the Varsity team has kept me motivated and wanting more from hockey. Itā€™s taught me organizational skills and time management ā€“ just striving to be the best you can be in the classroom and on the ice.&nbsp;</p> <p>Getting the opportunity to come to Ā鶹ֱ²„app is a privilege. Itā€™s given me this connection to the Leafs. Being part of the emergency goalie rotation, much like my&nbsp;<a href="/news/pretty-surreal-varsity-blues-goalie-serves-maple-leafs-back">old [Varsity Blues] goalie partner, Alex Bishop</a>, is pretty great. Heā€™s one of my best buddies, so itā€™s cool getting to share that experience with him.</p> <p>You have to make your schedule at the beginning of the year for both semesters around what your practice times will be. Our games are typically on Friday and Saturday and theyā€™re usually around 7 p.m. You have to plan your days and your weekends accordingly. Youā€™re a student first, so getting good grades is important. After class, Iā€™m usually on the rink or in the gym. It makes for a busy time throughout the hockey season, which is from September until early March.</p> <p>It also teaches you how to be a good teammate and how to work well with each other. I think something that hockey players typically have is an abundance of that team-first mentality. It gives you an appreciation for the work that other people put into it as well. It takes everyone involved to make the ship run.</p> <p>Itā€™s taught me my biggest life lessons and itā€™s a huge privilege to be where I am.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 13 Apr 2023 02:02:54 +0000 mattimar 301049 at Varsity Blues goalie Jett Alexander makes his NHL debut: Toronto Star /news/varsity-blues-goalie-jett-alexander-makes-his-nhl-debut-toronto-star <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Varsity Blues goalie Jett Alexander makes his NHL debut: Toronto Star</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-04/GettyImages-1251012907-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=KnP1s6wp 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2023-04/GettyImages-1251012907-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=irQlNi7W 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2023-04/GettyImages-1251012907-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=7QpFXR7b 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-04/GettyImages-1251012907-crop.jpeg?h=afdc3185&amp;itok=KnP1s6wp" alt="Jett Alexander playing as a Toronto Maple Leaf"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>mattimar</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2023-04-10T11:56:59-04:00" title="Monday, April 10, 2023 - 11:56" class="datetime">Mon, 04/10/2023 - 11:56</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p>Varsity Blues goalie Jett Alexander warms up after being called up by the Toronto Maple Leafs during a game against the Montreal Canadiens (photo by Kevin Sousa/NHLI via Getty Images)</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author-reporters field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/authors-reporters/mariam-matti" hreflang="en">Mariam Matti</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-topic field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Topic</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/topics/our-community" hreflang="en">Our Community</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/current-sudents" hreflang="en">Current Sudents</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/faculty-arts-science" hreflang="en">Faculty of Arts &amp;
