Andrei Yudin, a professor in the department of chemistry in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has been recognized with a 2025 Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award by the American Chemical Society (ACS).

The annual award recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of organic chemistry that have become apparent during the preceding half-decade.

“Since 2006, my research group has been involved in the study of amphoteric molecules. They show both electrophilic and nucleophilic reactivity,” said Yudin. "This chemistry has allowed us to prepare a broad range of structures with useful properties. It is our work in this area that is being recognized.”

Yudin, who will accept the award and deliver a lecture about his work at the 2025 ACS National Meeting in Washington, D.C. next summer, said he finds inspiration in the elegance of chemical structures and the diverse ways in which they react with one another. “I like the inherent logic of organic chemistry," he said.

Maria Hupfield, an assistant professor in �鶹ֱ��app Mississauga's department of English and drama, has received a 2025 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship from the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indiana.

Given every other year, the fellowship aims to bring Indigenous contemporary art to the forefront and cast a spotlight on the works of leading Indigenous artists from across the U.S. and Canada.

Hupfield, who is Anishinaabe and a member of Wasauksing First Nation, holds a Canada Research Chair in Transdisciplinary Indigenous Arts and is the director and lead artist at �鶹ֱ��app Mississauga's Indigenous Creation Studio. She also works with graduate students in the master of visual studies program at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at �鶹ֱ��app.

Her current research program comprises a community medicine garden, Indigenous creation studio and a living archive, with each space designed to facilitate the development of creative work grounded in Indigenous oral traditions and the natural world.

Geoffrey Hinton, a University Professor Emeritus of computer science at the University of Toronto, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Awarded since 1901, the Nobel Prize in Physics is one of five prizes established by the will of Alfred Nobel and honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field.

Hinton, widely regarded as the “godfather of AI,” shared the prize with John J. Hopfield of Princeton University for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.

Hinton was recognized for his use of the Hopfield network – a neural network invented by his co-laureate – as the foundation for a new network called the Boltzmann machine that can learn to recognize elements within a given type of data.

“On behalf of the University of Toronto, I am absolutely delighted to congratulate University Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton on receiving the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics,” said �鶹ֱ��app President Meric Gertler. “The �鶹ֱ��app community is immensely proud of his historic accomplishment.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lauded Hinton for being both “a stalwart in the field” of AI and an “outspoken advocate” for its responsible use. “Canada is at the forefront of AI technology thanks to trailblazers like Dr. Hinton,” Trudeau said in a statement. “His curiosity for discovery and contributions to innovation will inspire generations to come. On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate him on his remarkable achievement.”

Hinton, who joined �鶹ֱ��app as a professor of computer science in 1987, said he was "flabbergasted" at the accolade. “I had no expectations of this,” said Hinton, who is also chief scientific adviser at the Vector Institute, which he co-founded. “I am extremely surprised and I'm honoured to be included.”

Hinton's Nobel Prize is the latest in a long list of honours which includes the Association for Computing Machinery’s A.M. Turing Award in 2019 – widely considered “the Nobel Prize of computing” – alongside collaborators Yann LeCun and Yoshua Bengio, election to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, a Royal Medal from the Royal Society, Companion of the Order of Canada and Fellow of the Royal Societies of Canada and London.

Fifteen faculty members from �鶹ֱ��app have been elected fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) for 2024 in recognition of excellence in health sciences.

Election to CAHS fellowship is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the Canadian health sciences community.

“Election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences acknowledges outstanding contributions to the health sciences,” said Trevor Young, �鶹ֱ��app's vice-president and provost and the president of CAHS, in a press release. “We are proud of these fellows’ accomplishments, and we are honoured to welcome them to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.”

Mina Tadrous, an assistant professor in the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, has received the Dr. Maurice McGregor Award for a Rising Star in Health Technology Assessment from Canada’s Drug Agency.

This award honours an early-career professional who is pushing the science of health technology assessment (HTA) forward and helping to grow Canada’s reputation for excellence in the field.

Tadrous conducts research that has led to meaningful change at both the policy and patient level. At the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network, he played a key role in implementing a novel framework for drug class reviews that enhanced standard HTA methods with patient perspectives and real-world evidence.

Tadrous, who was appointed a tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Real World Evidence and Pharmaceutical Policy earlier this year, has also led work related to drug shortages, devising strategies that will help to safeguard Canada’s drug inventory.

Gordon Anderson, a professor emeritus in the department of economics in the Faculty of Arts & Science, has received the Kendrick Prize from the International Association for Research in Income and Wealth (IARIW).

The annual award recognizes a paper published in The Review of Income and Wealth during the previous calendar year.

Anderson was recognized for his paper, "Has Canada’s 21st Century Grand Gender Convergence Stalled? Male and Female Income and Human Resource Stock Distributions Viewed Through an Equal Opportunity Lens," which was published in December 2023.

“The prize means a great deal to me because gender differences are a particular focus of my recent and ongoing research on economic well-being, health and human resources,” said Anderson, who retired in 2018 after spending three decades teaching at both the St. George campus and �鶹ֱ��app Mississauga.

“Gordon Anderson is a remarkable example to young economists,” said Professor Ettore Damiano, chair of the department of economics. "He stays current and engaged with his field and continues to publish meaningful work while enjoying his children and grandchildren.

"I am very pleased to see the IARIW recognize his work and award him this honour.”

Lisa Cranley, an associate professor in the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, has been awarded a 2024 Compassion and Artificial Intelligence Fellowship by AMS Healthcare.

The fellowship recognizes researchers for showcasing compassionate leadership in health care through visionary projects that aim to help care providers navigate a complex and rapidly evolving health-care landscape.

Cranley's research involves the co-development of a high-fidelity prototype of a digital app that will support compassionate, person-centred care for residents of long-term care homes by supporting them and their family caregivers in developing care plans that give them a sense of autonomy and voice in their care provision.

“Person-centred care is compassionate care, and for me this means ensuring that my research will advance compassionate care delivery in an innovative way while being relevant and useful to the populations that it will serve," Cranley said.

Thirty-four scholars from the University of Toronto will receive research infrastructure funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) through its John R. Evans Leaders Fund.

The fund aims to support universities’ research infrastructure and help them compete in recruiting and retaining exceptional researchers. �鶹ֱ��app projects will receive a total of $10.6 million in the latest round of funding, announced Sept. 13, 2024.

“From exploring the links between neural activity and stress to designing next-generation spectrographs to enhance our understanding of celestial phenomena, these research projects are poised to expand knowledge in an array of crucial fields,” said Leah Cowen, �鶹ֱ��app’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

“I would like to congratulate all the recipients of this funding support, and express �鶹ֱ��app’s gratitude to the Canada Foundation for Innovation for its continued backing of critical research infrastructure.”

Douglas Sanderson (Amo Binashii), a professor, Prichard Wilson Chair in Law and Public Policy and decanal adviser on Indigenous issues at the Faculty of Law, will receive an honorary doctorate from Concordia University.

The university awards honorary doctorates recognizing the exemplary contributions of distinguished individuals. Sanderson is recognized for his expertise and leadership in Indigenous and Aboriginal law.

Sanderson, who is Beaver Clan from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation, completed his juris doctor (JD) at �鶹ֱ��app and went on to become the managing editor of the inaugural edition of the Indigenous Law Journal. He has served as a senior advisor at what is now Ontario’s Ministry of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation, as well as Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General.

He's also the co-author of the award-winning book, Valley of the Birdtail: An Indian Reserve, a White Town, and the Road to Reconciliation, co-written with his former student, Andrew Stobo Sniderman.

“As the decanal advisor on Indigenous issues at our faculty, Douglas's work has had far-reaching impact beyond the classroom to the very core of our community and the law's role in reconciliation,” says University Professor Jutta Brunnée, dean of the Faculty of Law and James Marshall Tory Dean’s Chair. “An honorary degree from Concordia University is a wonderful recognition of his expertise and scholarship.”

Sanderson will address graduates and receive his honorary doctorate at Concordia’s Faculty of Arts and Science ceremony on Oct. 15.

Two faculty members and a doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto have been shortlisted for the 2024 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Impact Awards.
